MODERN ART IN ADVERTISING / Daniel Catton Rich

嘗て“Container Corporation of America (CCA)” という社名の、主に輸送用の紙パッケージ（ダンボール）を生産する1926年創業の企業があった。現在は数回の企業間の合併を繰り返し、その名はない。製品以上にその名を知らしめているのがCCA の広告である。ヨーロッパのモダニズムを感じさせる数多くのグラフィック･デザイナーやアーティストを起用した広告は、一企業として群を抜いている。オーストリア出身のグラフィック･デザイナーHerbert Bayer による同社のポスター広告キャンペーン“Great Ideas of Western Man” (1950-1975) には修道女アーティスト、コリータ･ケントも起用され、イエズス会の司祭であり哲学者のBaltasar Gracian の教えを引用したデザインのポスターを製作している。

1945年4月から7月にかけてThe Art Institute of Chicago で開催されたCCA の広告デザイン展を経て刊行された作品集。
広告をスタートした1937年から1946年までの広告作品が収録されている。特に28カ国をテーマに4色の広告シリーズ“The United Nations” は、錚々たるアーティストが手掛けている。
